The Filmmaker's Journey - Day 1 (Freezing my butt off)
by Rohit Jayakaran on March 1st, 2012

Its Day Two of my filmmaker’s journey in the United States but Day 1 of the Taos Shortz Film Festival and Filmapalooza 2012. So, this is perhaps a first…I am actually blogging two days in a row. Just for this I think I deserve an award…or at least a pat on the back. I must however say that the reason I am blogging is because I know you guys are reading this. So…first of all - THANKS. Do leave a comment once you read this…kind of helps me know whom I should target my blogs to. As of now most of you are reading this only because you know I will kick your ass if you don’t…that’s a good start though…☺
Ok so before I get to what I wanna talk about today…I forgot to mention some really hilarious stuff that happened on my drive from Albuquerque to Taos yesterday. Basically if read my DAY 0 blog you would have noticed that I was in quite a hurry to get to Taos and pretty much right though the trip I did not have time to eat. As a result when I got into the car in Albuquerque, I was starving. I was desperate to eat something nice and yummy. I crossed many a McDonald’s and a few KFC’s. However all of a sudden I saw a board that read, “Indian Food, Next Exit.” I was super excited. If you have ever been to New Mexico you will realize that a board like this stands out. In Dubai, you see Indian Food everywhere, so it’s not a big deal, but in New Mexico, this really got me salivating.
So, I took the next exit and reached the restaurant serving – ‘Indian Food’…and guess what…they did not mean ‘Indian’ like…from Bur Dubai or Mumbai…they kind meant ‘Native American.’ I got back on the freeway and headed for McDonalds.
Anyways back to Day 1 of my Filmmaker’s Journey…This morning after a delicious breakfast, which consisted of a Spanish omelet and toast, I headed for the Ski Valley in Taos. Taos as I mentioned in my last blog is a small town in Northern New Mexico that is famous for its Native American heritage and amazing Ski Slopes. The drive though the winding roads in the Camaro was super awesome. I kicked the car into Sports mode and reached the ski slope in no time at all. Then I got out of the car…froze my butt off…got back in…and left in about 45 seconds. Man it was cold. Like -10 to -12 cold. Man…it was COOOOOOOOLD…you know I never get why people sky in the winter…its just so much warmer in summer. Man…I am still shivering thinking of this morning. I thought I would click a photo or two, but figured it was not worth it. Man…it was cold….and windy. For those of you thinking, “Rohit you chicken…”…go stick your head in the freezer for 20 minutes and then we’ll talk.
So…I reversed out of the parking and headed back down the hill to downtown Taos. My car started warning me about the road icing. Nope…that has nothing to do with cupcakes…icing apparently has something to do with ice getting onto the road, which makes your car slip and slide like the Ice Skater in Dubai Mall. Yup…you might laugh at them when you are in the Mall but when it happens to your car, no one is laughing.
Anyways as I was driving back to the town, I figured that I needed to get at least one or two photos. I noticed that there was a small river running along side the road. I stopped a few times to get a good picture, but each time I did, I just about got one or two shots before I realized my body was not built for the cold. After driving a few more miles I finally found an awesome spot where the road and river curved. This made the river look awesomely beautiful. So, ignorant old me decided to walk up to the river. I saw lots of snow there so I decided to walk on it to get to the river. At this point in time if you are thinking… “No Rohit, don’t be a moron…don’t do it…”where were you when I really needed you?
Anyways, I kept my eyes on the beautiful river and the log of wood that had fallen across it. Over the last few days, snow had gathered on it and it was just such an awesome photo opp. I walked past the trees and as I was about to reach the water, with purpose I stepped on the snow. As I lifted my other leg to move forward, the snow collapsed under my foot sending me 2 and a half feet into the snow. It almost felt like I was drowning…I moved my other foot to what I believed was firm ground. Guess what…I was wrong. The struggle continued for about 5 more steps as I frantically searched for firm ground. Eventually I just leaned out and rolled on snow and mud to get out of there. What was amazing though was that right through this ordeal, my two hands were up in the air protecting my camera. This is when you know you have your priorities in life all wrong. I walked to the car and it took me a whole minute to I realized I was bleeding. I would have noticed earlier but I was trying to find a dry cloth to wipe my camera. Priorities Rohit Priorities!!! If you are wondering…yup…the camera is just fine.
I got back into the car, soaking wet in ice-cold water, turned the heater on to maximum and got my butt back to the hotel. After a quick change of clothes I headed to the downtown area of Taos. I walked around the shops that seemed quite interesting. Post that I headed to one of the megastore to get some MORE warm clothes. As I was about to order lunch I saw a message on Facebook posted by the organizers of the festival asking for some help with the registration process. I figured I was not doing anything earth shattering at the moment so I decided to help out. This I think was a super cool idea because I got to meet all the filmmakers from around the world who were coming in to pick up their badges. I met people from Australia, Holland, Scotland, Singapore, Malaysia, Czech Republic, Mongolia, China, Canada, Brazil, France, Japan, Poland, Russia and of course the US. I am sure my memory is failing me right now because I am sure their were many more.
One of the other awesome things about today was the fact that I got to meet two very interesting people – Mark Ruppert and Liz Langston. They are the founder of the 48 Hour Film Project. I had a very inspirational chat with them about how the whole concept came around. The competition is now in its 12th year and has seen over 15,000 films being screened. They were kind enough to spare a few moments for an exclusive interview for my blog. This is unedited but crisp. Check it out right here.
The moral of the story…start living your dream. That’s about it from me for DAY 1. I will blog more tomorrow evening. Until then…have fun…and don’t forget to comment…I’ll be watching!!!
