The Three Month Challenge
by Rohit Jayakaran on January 18th, 2014

A few weeks ago, I was asked to take up a challenge. For those of you who know me, you would imagine that this challenge would involve some sort of extreme sport. Perhaps jumping out of a plane, diving with sharks or driving down Jabal Hafeet blindfolded. What if I told you that the challenge was tougher than anything I have ever done before? For those of you who know me really really well, you know that the toughest challenge for me would be – To to eat right!!!

As you read this, you are probably thinking – ROHIT…and EAT RIGHT…this I got to see! Well you will…over the next three months my challenge is to ‘Go 100% Organic and eat right.’
24 Mantra Organic Foods, a brand from India which is exclusively available at all Choithrams in the UAE has just launched in the country and over the next 3 months, Simply Healthy Diets led by nutritionist Mitun De Sarkar will be providing me with Organic Food supplied by Choithrams to see what sort of changes it brings about in a person like me.
I love a challenge and I’m all excited. I’m perhaps an unlikely candidate for something like this, but perhaps one who could benefit from this the most, and here is why I think that is the case. You see as Indian’s we don’t always watch what we eat. From birthdays to festivals we are always eating something that is really tasty. And going by what most people believe, tasty usually means unhealthy. This is what I believed going into this challenge. Fortunately I don’t have everything in life figured out and Simply Health Diets has made me unlearn some of my assumptions.
A week ago, I started the challenge. It was an overcast Saturday morning with the promise of rain sometime during the day. I woke up to the sound of my doorbell ringing and a Blue Bag from Simply Health Diets was handed to me. The instructions were simple…eat on time…keep the empty bag outside the door for it to be exchanged the next morning. I opened the bag and found clearly marked containers telling me what I should eat for which meal.

As part of this challenge I also met with Mitun De Sarkar who along with having a great singing voice is also an amazing Dietician. When we met, she asked me to run though my daily routine and explain to her what and when do I eat. About a minute into the conversation, she had a whole page of notes and it seemed as though she was not stopping. Just so you get the drift…No Notes equals good news…many notes is not so good news!
You see, while there are so many things to change, I have realized over the last week that the human body wants to follow a nicer routine. Not eating on time makes the body stop trusting you. Your body starts storing resources for that, ‘Just in case he does not eat moment.’ These ‘resources’ that the body stores up make your clothes not fit you anymore. You know what I mean!!!
My new routine is simple. I wake up and drink a glass of warm water with a squeezed lemon. Breakfast follows. I get to work and then have a mid-morning snack. Eat a big lunch on time and then a snack around 4. At 7pm I eat dinner and I am done for the day. I drink plenty of water but make sure I don’t drink water 30 minutes before and after meals. I’ve dropped sugar from my diet and have chosen green tea over coffee.
This week has been a very happy week. I’m loving the food. I actually want to chew the food for longer because I really enjoy the fresh taste. The organic fruits are delicious and noticeably yummier. The veggies in the salad are juicy and crisp. The most amazing thing for me this past week has been that I no longer feel guilty about the food I’m enjoying. I always eat yummy food…but have always felt guilty about its nutritional value. Now, I know I’ve dropped guilt from my life…and that is a good thing.
In this challenge over the next three months I’m joined by :
Clare Geeves, Candidate (Australian expat in Dubai. TV presenter for SPLASH Fashion, Blogger and Stylist)
Andreea Zoia, Candidate (Romanian model-cum-TV presenter in the UAE).
Thank you Ritu Raizada for handling the PR on this and for giving me the opportunity to change my life around and to Mr. Subhash Kurup, Marketing Head - Choithrams.
So, if you have every felt guilty about the food that you eat, follow the unlikely journey of this - Health Eating, Organic Food Loving, Salad seeking, Green Tea drinking - Desi Biker. I’d love to say this is a mouth full, but lately I have realized that if your mouth is full, chew well.

Oh btw…the toughest part of the week was trying to figure out how to carry the food bag on my Harley. Finally figured that one out…phew.
